Raul Ibanez: Warm Up and BP

on Thursday, 15 September 2011. Posted in Lee's Blog

Raul Ibanez is more than a former client of mine. I am able to say with great pride that I have had the privilege of training Raul through 2 of his most successful years of his career (Age 35 & 36!). To pat myself on my own back, Raul states that the two years that we worked together were the best that he had felt from spring training to the end of the season! But that isn’t the reason it’s been such a privilege and why I have such great pride in working with him. It’s what Raul does that is so special, from your initial introduction he communicates respect and he immediately asks genuine questions to get to know you. It seems as if he does that to ease the anxiousness that typically arises from a fan/person getting to meet a professional athlete and then he humbly answers any questions, and closes his conversations with the pleasure that he had in talking or meeting them.

As the great Dan Pfaff stated “Intelligent, intuitive athletes are a great source of coach education; don’t underestimate the value of an athlete as a learning resource.” I couldn’t agree more, I have to say that every time I reconnect with Raul it’s an opportunity to be encouraged and this time was no different. As with baseball there are endless statistics and in this conversation with Raul, I want to echo to the young athletes out there that are in pursuit of becoming the best that they can be, that you must be willing to not only ask questions but more importantly to ask the right questions. Raul spoke about how it was brought to his attention that MLB averages with 2 strikes was around .180. Instead of saying well I guess I can lower my expectations when I get 2 strikes. He asked who are the guys that are hitting well with 2 strikes, I want to know who they are and I want to ask them what they are doing! I’m really looking forward to this off-season (we’ve added some new tweaks!), we are continuing to evolve just like our good friend Raul, 20 years and counting in professional baseball!... are you evolving????

Check out below our unique warm-up that we used before Raul hit the cages and more to follow on why we use this as a warm-up
