Speed is an interesting skill. While many see it a Speed is an interesting skill. While many see it as primarily innate, it is important to define speed a bit. 

The statement that top-end velocities have a heavy genetic component, is that really what we mean when we talk about speed. We would argue that training SPEED is about getting from one point to another in less time - regardless of a true % change in top-end velocity. 

And while top-speed is largely genetic factors, it isn’t entirely so. Even more so, technical efficiency in the start, starting strength and the components of acceleration are highly trainable and not as reliant on genetic factors.

The start is highly dependent on force production while max velocity running is more dependent on elasticity and stiffness to be able to handle high forces, but not to necessarily produce them.

This is where the role of strength is in speed development. We can spend our time focusing on fractions of a % improvement, or we can spend more time focusing on the areas we can experience greater benefit (the start/acceleration). To us, that choice is clear. 

One thing to note here is that acceleration and the start are far more important than peak speeds in nearly every team sport, so not only are we trying to train only the least trainable component, but it’s a component that likely you won’t even have an opportunity to use within your sport.

To be clear - Speed training is complex and must be treated as so. Strength, power, technique, energy system development and max velocity plays a role in overall speed. Most only focus on one piece of a complex puzzle - and it’s often the least likely to yield results for a team sport athlete IF IT IS THEIR SOLE MODE OF TRAINING SPEED. In order to build speed, you MUST run at peak speeds and intensities. But there is indeed a huge benefit that most developing athletes look past when it comes to their speed - their STRENGTH!

This and their start technique will yield the quickest results for those athletes that are lacking the ability to showcase speed in their sport.
